Addressing Fear and Building Mindset You have to address fear before anything. I can give you the armor, the sword and the shield. But if you don't have the mindset, you're not going to last long. Tell us about the mindset. Well, it's a morbid anticipation of something that hasn't happened. And so if you're afraid of a teacher or a cop, you're doing something wrong. But if you come to work, pen at the ready and on time, I should be there to encourage you, you're an asset. And so I need to get rid of bad habits or start from scratch. And what I like to do prior to even starting a training class is putting them in the arcade. So those dozen agents can play pinball, have fun together and relax before going into a training class. So they're not just absorbing, they're contributing. And I'm showing good faith in the beginning by letting them know that play is undoubtedly the most important medium to build that sort of foundation and stability, because we can laugh together and compete in a nice way, kind of like when tigers fake bite, but they get stronger. Richard’s journey in the call center space is filled with twists and turns. When he was 27 years old, he relocated to Costa Rica to train employees for one of the larger call centers in San Jose. With a mix of motivational public speaking style backed by tactful and appropriate rhetoric, Richard shared his knowledge and trained over 10 000 bilingual telemarketers. Richard Blank has the largest collection of restored American Pinball machines and antique Rockola Jukeboxes in Central America making gamification a strong part of CCC culture. Richard Blank is the Chief Executive Officer for Costa Rica’s Call Center since 2008. A Keynote speaker for Philadelphia's Abington High School 68th National Honors Society induction ceremony. In addition, inducted into the 2023 Hall of Fame for Business. Giving back to Abington Senior High School is very important to Mr. Blank. As such, he endows a scholarship each year for students that plan on majoring in a world language at the university level. Why Move to Costa Rica?

Becoming Titans Podcast Episode #44- "Creating Roots" with Costa Rica's Call Center Richard Blank. Your host, Russ Yeager, talks with CEO of Costa Rica's Call Center. On the Becoming Titans podcast, we interview successful entrepreneurs and business leaders who are making a positive impact in the world with their business and in their lives. These high achievers have been so focused on their business that they have not made their body and health a priority in the past and are now actively working towards a better work-life-health balance. We believe that every individual has a unique and powerful message. You’ll be hearing real stories from highly respected businessmen. Listen and learn from the changes these leaders are making as they are Becoming Titans! Financial Prudence and Authenticity in Business It made sense to me, but I was always, I'd rather own the dirt than have the building taken away from me. And I also would like to sleep at night because these are the sort of things that can get you in a rabbit hole. or a spider's web, and it just doesn't get any better. And so listen, Ross, you and I like each other, regardless of if I'm wearing a suit or not, and we're going to be good friends. And so I don't need to impress you with a Rolex, and I don't need to have some sort of imagery in order to earn your respect and be your friend. And there's a lot of pressure in business, maybe to rent out the best in commercial real estate. or to throw those parties that just are over the top. And that's fine. But then again, be responsible. You're trying to weather storms. You're trying to start a business. And how about this? The money that you saved could be purchasing secondhand computers, office furniture, or anything else that someone may be going out of business. You today, me tomorrow. And it's just the kind of thing where you could be at the right time to scoop up opportunities. because you were conservative during certain times. The Art of Communication I love that. This isn't one of my normal questions, but have you done radio or have you done some kind of speech classes? You are one of the most articulate, concise, clear, well-spoken individuals I've ever talked with. Is that natural or is that practice? Well, of course, you know that a smile gets you a long way. And I guess we'll give kudos to the University of Arizona Communication Department. But if I may make some suggestions, I mean, there are certain actors in certain roles that I studied, not just enjoyed. I went as far back as Basil Rathbone when he was with Nigel Bruce doing Sherlock Holmes. He was an exquisite speaker. I enjoyed Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes. He was an incredible speaker as well. But getting even into the 80s, Remington Steele and Templeton Peck were some of the most amazing linguists out there. And so when you're studying these individuals that have this art of speech and they're clever and they're glib and they have extensive vocabulary, obviously they're very diplomatic and strategic and their message packs a punch. And since I realize it goes a long way, I studied it. Yeah, I hope you guys listening are not missing the lesson here. We're not just having a conversation. As a business owner, how you articulate, how you can communicate with others is going to have a massive impact on your business. I have a speaking coach I work with. I'm not nearly as... as polished as Richard is. But, you know, I've been taught how to tell my story, how to connect with people. You know, I have that big kind of, you know, energy, that magnetic attractiveness. But, you know, the way, you know, Richard is communicating, I'm captivated. He's got my attention. And that is, my friend, you know, the first value that you've already added for the audience. So thank you The Becoming Titans podcast has accepted Richard Blank's invitation to join the audience for a solid discussion regarding starting a company from scratch in Costa Rica as an expat. Topics include: advanced telemarketing strategy, conflict management, interpersonal soft skills, customer support, rhetoric, gamification, employee motivation, phonetic micro expression reading. The Power of Delegation and Collaboration in Business And if you do due diligence, if you find people where you can delegate to assist you, because I might be the trunk of the tree, but I need roots and I need branches, I can't do it all on my own. And one of your earlier questions about the acclamation to Costa Rica was I need to hire specialists. I needed individuals here that knew the law and knew the, you know, the rules for labor and accounting and even architecture. I couldn't do that. And even the IT department, I'm a specialist. I'm a trainer. I'm a motivator. You want to call me a telemarketer, fine, but I'm also a writer. I don't have the, composure to sit down and study IT. I needed people for that. And so if you are willing to let go a little bit, not the entire range, but let someone grab on it as well, and two people can walk together, you might be able to expand your business. You might have more time to focus on other things. The Power of Self-Reflection Really at the end of the day, my man, it's about how you look at you. It's not about how other people look at you. They're not going home with you. And so if you can just be proud of yourself and stand tall, you're going to be great. People will still gravitate towards you. You'll still have a friend. Why Move to Costa Rica? So was it the opportunity or was it the country that made you go to Costa Rica? Well, it's both. I mean, I wasn't going to North Korea or Siberia. And so when someone says Costa Rica, and you told me prior to this podcast how amazing time you had with you and your wife on your trip here. And so, yes, of course, Costa Rica, why wouldn't you want to go? And so when I came here, I fell in love with the culture. It's very close to the United States. It's the only democratic society in Central America. So I felt very safe. North of Panama, south of Nicaragua. And it's just gorgeous in regards to ecotourism. And so I was really it was almost shedding a skin. I was reborn when you watch these movies of coming of age moments. And it could be at any time of your life. You realize the tingling and the noise in the background that you are in your moment. And I decided to seize it. And I knew that I was prepared for this. And by keeping an open mind, having good intentions and knowing that I'm a guest in this country, it made that sort of transition that much easier compared to being a loud tourist that's expecting things. My friend, I was not on a home court advantage, which was fine. It just gave me stimulation and kept me on my toes, but I was exceptionally respectful and I didn't wanna cause any sort of waves. And by doing so, I guess there was a positive reinforcement, not just socially, but economically, where I'm able to feed families and I built this business. And so the long shot paid off. And as long as you have that sort of patience and you chip away, you can almost Shawshank Redemption in your life and get out there and have your freedom and your liberty.
