Dr. Brian King trained as a neuroscientist and psychologist and for the past decade has traveled the world as a comedian and public speaker. By day he conducts seminars, presented nationwide and attended by thousands of people each year, on positive psychology, the health benefits of humor, and stress management. By night he practices what he teaches in comedy clubs. Dr. Brian began performing stand-up comedy in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2009, and has performed hundreds of shows around the world. He has a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas, a master's degree from the University of New Orleans, and a Ph.D. from Bowling Green State University, and is the author of The Art of Taking It Easy and The Laughing Cure. Dr. Brian hails from New York City and today spends his life on the road, traveling regularly with his partner, Sarah, and their young daughter. Business Ethics in a Strict Catholic Country But doctor, I'll tell you five campaigns I don't do. We don't work with sportsbooks, casinos, stocks, pharmacies, or sweet steaks. It's my standards. There's plenty of ways to make money out there. And I have nothing against it. I like gambling saloons. Yeah, it's cool. But I am in a strict Catholic country. And I want to make sure that when someone goes home, they can tell their parents what they do for a living. And you've heard the stories. And that's what gives call centers and telemarketers a bad rap. for these scams that they do. Leadership Philosophy: Motivating a Team Without Paddling And the only thing that I didn't understand was how to do the paperwork and how to pay the bills. But I knew the people. If I could keep them motivated and focused and increasing their ability to be more self-reliant, being better speakers and advanced vocabulary, then maybe I was doing my job. And it seemed to work. It was no resistance. It was like gravity or wind or even some current in the water. I don't have to paddle. I could sit back in a tube, me and you, just chilling. And so when life became easier, maybe became smarter because I didn't have to work as hard. And so you don't become a CEO of a call center. You don't go to school for it. And maybe between me and you, Doc, it allowed me to... get to enjoy the rock and roll lifestyle for a little bit, ride with them in the limo, get to be there while they're producing the song and see what that's like. And so I don't want that as a, it's something I don't think, it's such a trade off, because they have to earn a living, they got to get jobs, but then they never have time to practice with each other or they're strung out, they're too tired, they can't play a gig and it's just, they're torn. They're torn. They wish they could do it all day every day, but they have these other lives doing IT or telemarketing calls. And so I got to see the non-glamorous side of it that nobody ever gets to see. Yeah, that's pretty cool.

Finding Clarity Through Downtime Strategies That's when the mind goes, the long shower, the long walk, the plane ride. And that's usually when you get your best ideas. It's usually, Kevin, it's when you shed the skin and cut the fat. When you realize, hey, man, I think I overextended myself or I'm wasting too much time on caffeine and this other stuff. And the only way to get to that is to get into that sort of mindset. You can't turn it off like a light. And you know that. It's got to be a landing plane and a taking off. You got to keep blending it. If not, that's not your personality. You're not a black and white kind of guy and Superman rip off shirt kind of cat. It doesn't work though. The Future of Call Centers: AI and Human Touch In 10 years from now, 99% of us could be replaced. Think about an automatic telling machine for your cash. You don't need to go in the banks anymore. If AI keeps assisting people, moving them along, gathering the information and converting those calls, it's gonna work. Like IVR is integrated voice response you put in your things on the phone. But I tell you what, there'll always be a certain market that presses zero, that's willing to speak to the person at the ticketing counter, paying extra 20 bucks just to make sure it's done. Maybe we're concierge, first class, or just rare. But yeah, it will be adjusting my industry accordingly. And is that a good thing? I think it's a fantastic thing for the consumer. But I don't want people today to fully focus on nonverbal communication. I think the texting and emails and chatting, there's a miscommunication, misinterpretation. If you have the certain skills to be able to speak with somebody, you'll have a much more solid relationship, more memorable. You can transfer that electromagnetic energy. And you'll find your job much more fulfilling. But Kevin, my man, I can't thank you enough. I had the best time today on your podcast. I should be selling real estate in Scottsdale, getting yelled at by my older brother telling me to make more phone calls. But I think a lot of the excuses people are making is because they have a lot of pressure from their family or they've never left the island and they don't know what's out there or they're just comparing themselves to others that have never left the castle. And so you read about these fables. It's really a hero's journey. You're supposed to leave a castle, slay a dragon, and save a princess. How are you supposed to do it unless it's planned out for you? And so I'm not telling you to steal a car and drive cross-country. I was building on momentum from the second language, getting better at it, interning during college, certain jobs post-grad. So my goodness gracious, you see the trajectory. You see where it's going. This is... And you want to know something else? When somebody does wax on, wax off, dedicated practice above and beyond what work or school expects of you, reading the extra book, going, as you say, to the seminars, meeting the people, my God, is that a spark in somebody? You should never put that out if they're really practicing that violin and piano, no matter how it sounds, because they're living life, they're drinking it.
