Within this episode, Scott and Patrick had an amazing conversation with Richard Blank discussing the unlikely journey of being able to impact the lives of others as a result of tapping into the uncommon. When you understand the power of what you possess, you can create major impact in the lives of others.
In this episode, Scott, Patrick, and Richard talk about:
•Approaching from an inside out perspective.
•Power of connecting and plugging in.
•The need for relationship building.
•Realness and journey scars you possess.
•Understanding levels and growth.
Memorable Quotes
“....To me the 1st draft is the best draft.”
“I'm really only as stable as my foundation....”
You have a story that others need to hear, but how deep does your story run and what impact will that create? We are all planting seeds in a garden that we will never see, but how are you viewing the seeds you're planting? The power of your legacy and the depth of the impact is something many don't consider or focus upon. Life isn't about us, but the lives we impact. Scott and Patrick are finding ways to introduce the stories of others, the view on the legacy of others, and what others are working on that many don't know. They are driven on helping others find their heart story and what makes them unique. What's your view on legacy and your heart story that's central to your core? Let's go!
Legacy Digging with Two Native Sons Podcast has accepted Richard Blank's invitation to join the audience for a solid discussion regarding starting a company from scratch in Costa Rica as an expat. Topics discussed with Richard: advanced telemarketing strategy, conflict management, interpersonal soft skills, customer support, rhetoric, gamification, pinball machines, employee motivation, phonetic micro expression reading.
Richard’s journey in the call center space is filled with twists and turns. When he was 27 years old, he relocated to Costa Rica to train employees for one of the larger call centers in San Jose. With a mix of motivational public speaking style backed by tactful and appropriate rhetoric, Richard shared his knowledge and trained over 10 000 bilingual telemarketers. Richard Blank has the largest collection of restored American Pinball machines and antique Rockola Jukeboxes in Central America making gamification a strong part of CCC culture.Richard Blank is the Chief Executive Officer for Costa Rica’s Call Center since 2008.
Mr. Richard Blank holds a bachelors degree in Communication and Spanish from the University of Arizona and a certificate of language proficiency from the University of Sevilla, Spain. A Keynote speaker for Philadelphia's Abington High School 68th National Honors Society induction ceremony. Giving back to Abington Senior High School is very important to Mr. Blank. As such, he endows a scholarship each year for students that plan on majoring in a world language at the university level.
Costa Rica’s Call Center (CCC) is a state of the art BPO telemarketing outsource company located in the capital city of San Jose, Costa Rica. Our main focus has been, and will always be to personally train each and every Central America call center agent so that we may offer the highest quality of outbound and inbound telemarketing solutions and bilingual customer service to small and medium sized international companies, entrepreneurs as well as fortune 500 companies.
We encourage you to visit one of our call centers on your next personal vacation or business trip to Central America’s paradise, Costa Rica. While you are here, we would recommend taking an extra day of your trip to visit breathtaking virgin beaches, play golf next to the ocean, try your luck at deep sea fishing, explore tropical jungles, climb volcanos or just relax in natural hot springs. Come and see for yourself why call center outsourcing in Costa Rica is a perfect solution for your growing company and a powerhouse in the BPO industry.
Connecting with the Speaker
Appreciate that. And then as we go here to end the show, if somebody wanted to connect with you, ask questions, get some insight, potentially whatever they were looking at, what is the best way for them to connect and have that communication with you? First is they grab a plane ticket and fly down here. But if they're not able to do that today, they can give me a call toll free at 888-271-6750. You can shoot me an email at CEO at Costa Rica's callcenter.com. And finally, and this is where you gentlemen will be. I have a very large Facebook fan page about 97,000 local Costa Rican Ticos are on that. And it'll give you a pulse of the local BPO business processes outsourcing industry and also some of the great and cool things that we do in the evening.
Forging Your Own Path
And fast forward, you know, my wife was supposed to go to Stanford University and then she decided to go to CU Boulder or party school. And then she dropped out because she started doing nails and being a nail tech and, you know, all these different things. And of course, you know, the parents, you know, they just didn't understand because they just want so much better because they sacrificed so much and they did all these things. But now, right now they have their grandson and, you know, my wife is very successful business owner. And, you know, so you just never know. But like your parents, you know, they now they're OK with it because now they understand, like, you have to forge your own path.
Investing in Language and Soft Skills
And so by teaching these sort of advanced soft skills, especially since English is their second language, Scott, I pretty much invested in their future by talking about the thesaurus so they can learn similes and expand their vocabulary to be more clear when they speak.
Recharge and Teamwork: The Pac-Man Philosophy
And so maybe that individual needs to put some water on their face. I know it's not their break time, but why don't you put the kid downstairs for a minute? Let him play a game of Pac-Man. Let him recharge his batteries, come up. Or why don't you just have him on non-ready status? Why doesn't Patrick sit next to Scott for a minute? Because Scott's on a roll and listen in on a call and high five him when he's closing another. And then maybe from that buddy system, then you get your groove back. And so I believe that if somebody pauses between calls, And you get that sort of energy from someone sitting next to them. I'm not going to yell at you for not making that call that hour. Obviously, you're learning something from it. There's momentum there. There's high fives there. And don't kid yourself. You're still going to hit your numbers that day.
Shared Values and Ethical Success
Doesn't it make you feel better to know that you're not alone? Absolutely. And that the three of us gravitated towards one another because of the shared values. I don't know your family, but I could assume that this is how you were raised by your parents and grandparents. And so you're just doing it old school way, just like me. And that's very easy. It's like telling the truth. Right. I can tell the same story today as I can five years from now. And so as long as I keep this sort of very simple structure of ethics, morals, and just being a great guy, you know, I wouldn't be surprised that this lucky streak that I'm on does not end anytime soon.
The Case for a Game Room in the Office
And also, I guess when potential clients come to visit me, it says three things. First is, why don't you have a game room in your office? Second is, this is how I treat my people. And third is, this is how I treat myself. They say, but you're not professional. You shouldn't have games in an office. You should have another boring, uncomfortable piece of furniture or art in that area or some bad magazines that are seven years old that you don't want to read. And I said, no, no, listen, you do you. And this is my company. And I always believe maybe it's a youthful thing that I have.
Unlocking Potential: Earnings Beyond Expectations
Well, I don't want wasted potential. I've seen people that have decided to take an inbound customer support campaign, just the coast and the next thing you know, 10 years goes by. And so I want them to be converters. They have a lot of campaigns here that have very large commissions. In fact, if you're very talented on the phone, you might be able to earn more money than an attorney and a doctor in Costa Rica. Wow. And so it pays more than most vacations. And so when I see this potential, I just want to make sure they're comfortable with it and that it makes sense for them. And maybe just do some of the advanced training with them.

Commitment to Lifelong Fitness
David, I want to walk when I'm 70 and 80. I still want to play on par three golf courses. But I want to, I'm 50 years old now. So I still want to enjoy the later part of my life. So it's really maintaining what I currently have, which thankfully is an athletic body for my entire life. But it's not easy. I mean, it's six days a week. You're doing 20 minutes, which is cool. I'm putting in about a good two hours a day You're doing about a half an hour of cardio, 45 minutes to an hour of the weights. We're looking for at least 15 minutes, 20 minutes of work the core. And then I like to hit a bag. And so it's a good day. I mean, if I have the time. And I take my creatine, I can hypothetically, you're doing a lot of hiking, could just be a lot of leg strength, real thin up top. That's great and all, but what happens if you got to pull yourself up? And so you want to make yourself symmetrical. So your body once again, feels comfortable as well, because that could disrupt certain things too.
Learning the Art of Persuasion
But so for you, I'm genuinely curious. When did you figure out that you were good at talking to people and good at convincing people of things? I guess it was when I stood up to myself as a child and made arguments to be able to play on sports teams, to hang out with certain people, or to stay out past curfew. But every time I showed responsibility and followed through with my word, I got more leverage and more liberties.
Living as the Main Character
I always believe that the truest people ask follow-up questions. They just don't say, oh, something's going on. Stop doing other things. Drop anything else and roll with the current conversation. But in regards to your main character syndrome, I think we all have it. My good friend. We all are living our beautiful lives. You look in the mirror. You see things outside of your eyes. You have all your senses. You love and you live. That is your life. Unless you're as Pink Floyd says, just that other brick in the wall.
The Power of Authenticity in Career and Life
Honestly, I was doing that whole fake it to you, make it. If I wore the nicest suit and I sat up the straightest, then maybe eventually I would be at the top of the company. I realized eventually, luckily in my early 20s and not in my 40s like some other people I know, but I eventually learned that you can do both and the fake thing actually gets you nowhere and just being yourself and being that a little bit quirky and that a little bit weird will end up paying off. Being unique and you're true to your own taste.
The Unseen Grind: Dedication Beyond the Spotlight
But when I see people after coaching sessions, we do QA and go over soft skills that then the next day, that's dedicated practice. Those are the Rocky moves. That's how karate kid can be Johnny. And that's the important thing. that your audience realizes the amount of work that is done off camera. Even prior to this podcast, the movies of the beginning and the end, where's the middle middle? That's where the hunk is. That's what really happens. That's where the grind is. That's where the boxers really feel you out and know how to win on the later rounds.
The Value of Authenticity Over Faking It
If I wore the nicest suit and I sat up the straightest, then maybe eventually I would be at the top of the company. I realized eventually, luckily in my early 20s and not in my 40s like some other people I know, but I eventually learned that you can do both and the fake thing actually gets you nowhere and just being yourself and being that a little bit quirky and that a little bit weird will end up paying off.
The Value of Sincerity in Connections
They have mastered the comfort levels and the connections that people have. And it's usually through either greed or envy or vanity. I like when people have sincerity because it's true and it lasts longer. It's a, David, it's a stronger foundation for a long-term type of relationship compared to just small talk and just trying to have a crazy night on a Saturday. And so maybe it's just a little more depth, my friend, if you make yourself a little vulnerable and you're willing to share with people.
