On Another Track Podcast. Emigrate to Costa Rica to become a ‘Pinball Wizard’ like Richard Blank.
David Wilson is "On Another Track". It's been the story of my life and many other people that I have met. That is the motivation behind this podcast series. I want to take you on a journey, exploring people and places from around the world. I'll take you to places you have never been and to places where you might not want to go! My Dream.
Welcome to the 66th episode of my podcast series that shines a light on how people have changed their lives and what was involved in getting themselves On Another Track!
When you first meet Richard you are blown away by his clarity and amazing energy. Having been involved in call centres since the age of 27, what Richard doesn’t know about empathy and having a downright good time in the workplace, is not worth knowing.
Don’t get me wrong, he’s no pushover as he competes with the likes of Amazon but at the same time he manages to keep 150 local people employed in this Caribbean paradise.
David Wilson shines a light on how people have changed up their lives and what was involved in getting themselves On Another Track! I want to leave a legacy not only for today but for people searching for a future to life, the universe and all that! Sounds big? It is but guess what? There are so many people out there have great stories and advice. Are they willing to share it with the world? Let's find out, lets get "On Another Track!"
Being an army "Brat" for 25 years of my life has allowed me to be confident at meeting and talking to people around the world. Friends would often say "have you had your interview with David yet?" to the people I had just met.Coming from a Celtic, Glaswegian background, being a shrinking violet was not an option. You were in danger of being thought aloof if you didn't converse and pass the time of day. Especially if you were on a Glasgow bus!
Fast forward to my start in broadcasting in the 1980's. Leaving Germany and arriving in a small market town called Devizes in Wiltshire (20 miles north of Stonehenge) in the UK, I was looking to do something with my spare time. I happen to open the local paper to see an advert for "new presenters required at Devizes Hospital Broadcasting Service". That was it. I was off to the races! It was more than spinning records and sounding good on the radio. It was the old school way of learning to talk to people. I spent 15 happy years in broadcasting. Who would have thought it would hold me in good stead in the 2020's? I now reside in Canada but still broadcast back to the UK via the wonders of the world wide web and also host my weekly talks podcast series On Another Track.

Building a Business Brick by Brick
You're just buying it used, but it's never been used. And so by being smart, frugal, and having people, not myself, because they'll charge 20% more because I'm a gringo, but local contacts to bring you this stuff, I was able to save tens of thousands of dollars ramping this thing up. And so after two years of paying per station, I rented space for about six years. And after saving enough money and weathering a storm in 2010, I was capable of building a three-floor business that can house 300 seats. In fact, you can see the bricks behind me. And I know that you're expecting me to tell you about taking out mortgages, loans, partners. But once again, that's not how I was raised. It might have taken me 14 years to get to where I am today. But I was able to sleep at night. I could weather any storm. I had a ton of resources to handle that.

Commitment to Lifelong Fitness
David, I want to walk when I'm 70 and 80. I still want to play on par three golf courses. But I want to, I'm 50 years old now. So I still want to enjoy the later part of my life. So it's really maintaining what I currently have, which thankfully is an athletic body for my entire life. But it's not easy. I mean, it's six days a week. You're doing 20 minutes, which is cool. I'm putting in about a good two hours a day You're doing about a half an hour of cardio, 45 minutes to an hour of the weights. We're looking for at least 15 minutes, 20 minutes of work the core. And then I like to hit a bag. And so it's a good day. I mean, if I have the time. And I take my creatine, I can hypothetically, you're doing a lot of hiking, could just be a lot of leg strength, real thin up top. That's great and all, but what happens if you got to pull yourself up? And so you want to make yourself symmetrical. So your body once again, feels comfortable as well, because that could disrupt certain things too.
Learning the Art of Persuasion
But so for you, I'm genuinely curious. When did you figure out that you were good at talking to people and good at convincing people of things? I guess it was when I stood up to myself as a child and made arguments to be able to play on sports teams, to hang out with certain people, or to stay out past curfew. But every time I showed responsibility and followed through with my word, I got more leverage and more liberties.
Living as the Main Character
I always believe that the truest people ask follow-up questions. They just don't say, oh, something's going on. Stop doing other things. Drop anything else and roll with the current conversation. But in regards to your main character syndrome, I think we all have it. My good friend. We all are living our beautiful lives. You look in the mirror. You see things outside of your eyes. You have all your senses. You love and you live. That is your life. Unless you're as Pink Floyd says, just that other brick in the wall.
The Power of Authenticity in Career and Life
Honestly, I was doing that whole fake it to you, make it. If I wore the nicest suit and I sat up the straightest, then maybe eventually I would be at the top of the company. I realized eventually, luckily in my early 20s and not in my 40s like some other people I know, but I eventually learned that you can do both and the fake thing actually gets you nowhere and just being yourself and being that a little bit quirky and that a little bit weird will end up paying off. Being unique and you're true to your own taste.
The Unseen Grind: Dedication Beyond the Spotlight
But when I see people after coaching sessions, we do QA and go over soft skills that then the next day, that's dedicated practice. Those are the Rocky moves. That's how karate kid can be Johnny. And that's the important thing. that your audience realizes the amount of work that is done off camera. Even prior to this podcast, the movies of the beginning and the end, where's the middle middle? That's where the hunk is. That's what really happens. That's where the grind is. That's where the boxers really feel you out and know how to win on the later rounds.
The Value of Authenticity Over Faking It
If I wore the nicest suit and I sat up the straightest, then maybe eventually I would be at the top of the company. I realized eventually, luckily in my early 20s and not in my 40s like some other people I know, but I eventually learned that you can do both and the fake thing actually gets you nowhere and just being yourself and being that a little bit quirky and that a little bit weird will end up paying off.
The Value of Sincerity in Connections
They have mastered the comfort levels and the connections that people have. And it's usually through either greed or envy or vanity. I like when people have sincerity because it's true and it lasts longer. It's a, David, it's a stronger foundation for a long-term type of relationship compared to just small talk and just trying to have a crazy night on a Saturday. And so maybe it's just a little more depth, my friend, if you make yourself a little vulnerable and you're willing to share with people.
