His grades might not have been Ivy league standard, but his determination caught the attention of a dedicated Spanish teacher who, along with the late principal Norman Schmidt, believed in him and got him into Arizona for their language program. But how did he convince his parents to let him pursue this path instead of the traditionally coveted fields like Ivy League education or medicine? He invoked his great grandparents.
